The BA in Media Study: Critical Studies Concentration at the University at Buffalo is for students who want to understand how media works and why it matters. What you will learn

By completing the production concentration, you will:

  • Operate media technologies including cameras, sound equipment and production software
  • Explain and interpret media theory and apply it to your own creative work

Degree overview

The BA in Media Study requires 56 credits in the major. 

Coursework is organized into clear stages: 

  • Basic production courses that introduce core tools and media forms 
  • Intermediate production courses where you deepen skills in areas such as video, post-production, game design, web media or virtual reality 
  • Advanced production courses that allow you to specialize 
  • Introductory film and media studies courses that build historical and theoretical knowledge 
  • Upper-level film and media studies courses that expand critical analysis 
  • Electives at the 300 or 400 level
