The Minor in Italian Culture at the University at Buffalo introduces students to the rich cultural traditions and evolving identities of Italy and the global Italian diaspora. Spanning the Middle Ages to the present, the program explores literature, art, film, philosophy and social history while examining how Italian identity has developed across time and place.

This interdisciplinary minor is ideal for students interested in Italian culture who may not wish to pursue advanced language study.

What you will study

The Italian Culture minor offers an interdisciplinary approach to Italian history, culture and cultural production. Courses explore major intellectual and artistic movements as well as modern social and cultural developments. 

Topics explored in the minor may include: 

  • Italian literature and intellectual traditions 
  • Medieval and Renaissance culture 
  • Modern and contemporary Italian society 
  • Migration, diaspora and transnational identity 
  • Film, art and cultural production 

Core courses are designed so that students can participate without prior knowledge of the Italian language. 

Minor structure

The Italian Culture minor consists of 18 credits focused on Italian culture and cultural history. 

Students complete: 

Italian Culture Core (12 credits) 

Foundational courses that introduce major themes in Italian culture and society. 

Italian Culture Electives (6 credits) 

Two upper-level courses exploring different historical periods or cultural topics, such as medieval, early modern, modern or contemporary Italy. 

All courses must be completed for a letter grade. Students should consult with an Italian advisor to select electives that align with their academic interests.
