Kilim is a Bulgarian word which refers to a flat woven carpet. The term is borrowed from Turkish and originates from Persian. Kilims have been woven in Bulgaria since the 17th century and feature a diverse variety of patterns and symbols. Last summer, I learned about the tradition of Bulgarian kilim weaving while visiting family in the area.
This exhibition consists of a series of monotype prints featuring motifs drawn from my research. Also featured is a real kilim woven by my great grandmother. Honoring my family’s connection to this centuries-old tradition, “KILIM” is a conversation across generations, space, and cultures.
