In this theory/practice seminar, students will interrogate the strain of scholarly and artistic practices concerned with the cultural and material histories of media technology known as media archaeology.
In addition to now-canonical studies that focus on old and/or obsolete technologies, this class will include more recent projects that use media archaeology as a method for 1) investigating the materiality of media as it intersects with environmental and geological concerns and 2) decolonizing media studies, making visible the significance of non-western, "alternative," and indigenous media practices. Central to this class is be the assertion that the history of "old" media provides a rich resource for both artists and scholars. Final projects may be a creative media project and/or a research paper.
