Current Research

My research falls into a few key themes. The first acknowledges that some thoughts, attitudes, self-views and emotions have greater impact than others, and seeks to understand the predictors of this impact. This includes variables traditionally thought of as predictors of “attitude strength” (e.g., certainty, ambivalence) as well as traits like dispositional certainty and the mindfulness-related concept of decentering. Ongoing work is to refine our understanding of self-concept clarity to better predict when or for whom self-views will be impactful. A second theme is understanding attitudes in an interpersonal context, to better understand how attitudes guide behavior in interactions and how interactions shape attitudes. This includes research on attitudinal advocacy as well as on understanding how our interactions with others, and particularly how well they listen to us, shapes our attitudes. A final theme is understanding motivational processes in attitudes, with research explicitly examining people’s desire to change their own views. We find that people often desire different views, and these desires shape a variety of outcomes, including behavior and information processing.
